Epiphany: new & old custom
Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar – the Three Wise Men. Thanks to them, on January 6, almost every household has a Three Kings Cake on the table. The custom of baking a cake in which a lucky charm is hidden dates back to Roman times. In the 1950s, this tradition was revived by art historian Max Währen and the Swiss baker-confectioner trade. At that time, Richemont Craft School in Lucerne created the recipe still in use today.
In Switzerland the epiphany cake custom is more popular than in other countries. On average 1.5 million cakes are sold every year.
